　ストラトフォード・アポン・エイヴォンStratford-upon-Avonと言うヤヤコシイ名前の英国屈指の観光地です。ちなみに、ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンの「アポン・エイボン」は、浅瀬を渡る道ストラトフォードっていう地名がありふれているので、他と区別するために、-Upon-Avonをケツにくっつけて、エイヴォン川のストラトフォードって言います。ドイツ、ローテンブルクのRothenburg ob der Tauberなんかと似てますね。
　写真は、ニュー・プレイスNew Place跡地のノット・ガーデンKnot Gardenです。ノットガーデンとは、英国ルネサンス期の庭園形式で、ラヴェンダーやハーブなどできれいに剪定された、複雑な模様の生垣で囲まれた庭園のことを指します。よーく写真を見れば、きれいに刈り込まれたヘッジがあることがわかります。このノットガーデン（オリジナルは現存しない）は主に、貴族などのアッパー・クラスの邸宅で見ることができます。そりゃあそうでしょうね、こんな手のかかりそうな庭園なんて。あと、ここのノットガーデンで心にくかったのが、周りをりんごの木？の生垣で囲んで、周りからはノットガーデンが見えない仕掛けになっているんですよ。まさに、夏の昼下がりの夢のごときで、ノットガーデンに足を踏み入れたものだけの秘密の花園がそこにあるのです。
